Places and Spaces – A photography exhibition by Tristan Breeuwer

Fellow Montreal photographer Tristan Breeuwer presents his first solo photography exhibition “Places and Spaces”. The show presents various spaces and places, whether iconic Montreal architecture or unnoticed or forgotten urban landscapes, and attempts to present them in a “new light”. Some of the images are more representative of how a space is imagined or remembered, rather than how it is actually seen, while others are simply marked by the unique and unusual light falling on the scene. In either case, light plays a crucial role in each photograph. “Since light is the fundamental element in photography, the challenge I enjoy is to give light “presence” within a photograph. Most of the images in the show have succeeded in capturing this “presence”, making light itself their main subject…”

Tristan has a strong background in film making, having studied film production and working as director of photography on numerous independent film productions. Merging into still photography, he wanted to attempt to capture in one photograph, the mood, the characters, or the narrative that a film can offer. Yet not through typical staged narratives, nor through over-thought metaphorical representations. Eventually, through discovering and developing his own direction, he has found that his photographs, usually dark and mysterious, sometimes bright and joyful, often represent little worlds of their own…

the show runs until the end of August
opening night and vernissage : Thursday August 5th 6:00 pm – 11:00 pm

Matt and Laura have a love story that is incredibly romantic and practically Shakespearean; filled with drama, love at first sight and travel over long distances. The abridged version, however, is that they met over a Thanksgiving celebration while serving in the Peace Corps in Peru. Both were working in different cities and would take bus rides over the Andes to meet in a city in Northern Peru called Cajamarca. Given the importance that Peru had in their relationship and the large number of friends and “family” in Peru, they decided to return to the country where they fell in love to celebrate their wedding. Incredibly, about 60 people from around the world made the trek to Cajamarca, and combined with the Peruvians from across the country that came to Cajamarca, it became one of the biggest international destination weddings I’ve ever seen! After getting to know Matt and Laura better, however, it is no surprise that so many people came to witness their  marriage. Both have devoted their lives to serving others, and are obviously so beloved by their friends and family.

The wedding was held at a converted hacienda and bullfighting ring resort in a little town outside of Cajamarca called Banos del Inca, an area that is filled with hot springs where Atahualpa himself used to spend time. As the town is in the Andes, the temperature shifts dramatically over the course of the day, and in the early morning when it is still very cold, the hot springs create an incredible, surreal fog that covers everything. It was incredibly beautiful and unlike anywhere I’ve ever been! The lovely wedding was completely bilingual and incorporated both American and Peruvian wedding traditions, including Peruvian “dancing horses,” a huge spread of cuy, and a suprise marinera dance by Matt and Laura. It was such a unique and sweet wedding, and I could not have been more honored to get to return to Latin America for such a special celebration.

And also an enormous thank you to my dear Joel; I cannot imagine doing this trip without you, and to Miss Megan for the wonderful referral.

EXTRAORDINARY’ OPPORTUNITIES FOR NEW, EMERGING TALENT & YOUNG PHOTOGRAPHERS
New Talent, Young TPOTY and TPOTY/YPA Emerging Talent Award, Travel Photographer of the Year 2010

The international Travel Photographer of the Year awards have always sought to recognise young and emerging talent as well as the work of professional photographers and skillful amateurs. The 2010 awards take this to new heights, with the introduction of a new award – the Young Photographers Alliance Award – and the division of Young TPOTY into two age groups plus, of course, the popular New Talent category and the First Shot (beginners) award.

“TPOTY has helped many photographers – not just the winners – to raise their profile, sell their work, get commissions or launch photographic career. However, we wanted to further bolster what we have to offer to new and emerging photographic talent, and have teamed up with the Young Photographers’ Alliance to do just that. Both TPOTY and Young Photographers’ Alliance want to help people passionate about photography to get a good grounding which will enable them to pursue photography as a career, and the result is an extraordinary opportunity for emerging photographers,” said TPOTY founder, Chris Coe.

New Talent – ‘Sell It!’
The New Talent category is for all amateur or semi-professional photographers aged 19 years and over who are looking to start a career in photography. It challenges them to tell the story of a place, a destination, an experience, a journey, even a travel commodity, in the style of a travel advert. The winner will journey to India and Nepal with Intrepid Travel to shoot a photo essay, receive Adobe Photoshop CS5  and Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3 software, a Young Photographers Alliance portfolio review and feedback, a Lexar Professional 300x 16GB CompactFlash card and Lexar Professional Dual-Slot Card Reader, and a customised leather portfolio case from Plastic Sandwich. They will also be offered representation by Axiom, England’s premier travel photographic agency.

Young TPOTY
The 2010 Young TPOTY category is themed ‘Big World, Small World’. This year the upper age limit has been extended to 18 and the award is split into two age groups with prizes for each group, giving younger entrants a better opportunity to win. Entrants aged 14 and under submit a portfolio of images which show a place or country both in close up and in wider views. Entrants aged 15-18 have a choice of two sub-themes – People or Environment – which they must depict in close up and wider view.

The Young Travel Photographer of the Year will be chosen from the winners of these two age groups, and will receive Adobe Photoshop CS5 & Adobe Photoshop Lightroom software, Lexar Professional 300x 16GB CompactFlash card and Lexar Professional Dual-SlotCard Reader, a Wacom Bamboo Fun Pen & Touch tablet, and a YPA portfolio review and feedback. The winner of the under 14 age group and the winners of the People and Environment categories of the age 15-18 section each receive Adobe Photoshop Lightroom software, a Photo Iconic image critique session and a Lexar Professional 300x 8GB CompactFlash card, while the runners-up receive Adobe Lightroom and a Photo Iconic critique session.

TPOTY/YPA Emerging Talent Award
This year the TPOTY judges will give a special award to one young photographer. This award will be given to the most interesting entry from a photographer aged 25 years and under who has entered either the New Talent or Young Travel Photographer of the Year categories. As part of their prize, the winner will be mentored by an experienced professional photographer through a place on the YPA mentoring programme, and will be offered the opportunity of representation from Axiom. Prior to participating in the programme, the winner will receive some comprehensive practical and creative photography tution on a Photo Iconic photography course.

Entry costs £20 for New Talent, while entry for Young TPOTY is completely free.  Images can be uploaded at www.tpoty.com, or entrants may submit prints. Full details of how to enter can be found on www.tpoty.com. Entries close on October 9th.

(Crain's) — Threadless.com has made the jump from T-shirts to laptops, thanks to a deal with Dell Inc.

The Chicago-based Threadless is providing images to Dell's Design Studio where purchasers can customize their laptop lids. Threadless initially contributed 11 designs, and selections will be updated.

The Chicago firm joins nail-polish manufacturer OPI and Major League Baseball in offering designs for Dell laptop lids.

Jake Nickell, who co-founded Threadless in 2000, said in a statement that the Dell partnership was an “amazing opportunity” for the company as it celebrates its tenth year.

Threadless is also set to announce a deal to customize Havaianas flip-flops, according to a Chicago Tribune report.

Threadless operates on the concept of peer approval: Each week, it accepts T-shirt designs and puts them to a vote on its Web site. The company then prints a limited number of the most popular designs.

DELL laptop for daily use and maintenance

Chapter Battery
Batteries are consumables and has a limited life span , most manufacturers warranty for the laptop battery time ranging from three months to one year , Dell is to follow industry standardsYear limited warranty. For the battery , the correct use and proper storage, dell laptop battery is to significantly extend notebook battery life.

(A ), battery on Key Points

1 . Why use an external power supply , you can win without the battery ?

(1) DELL battery ’s internal chip to prevent overcharging . When the battery charge to 100 %, Dell Inspiron 630m Battery, Dell Inspiron 640m Battery, Dell Y9943 Battery the charge control chips (FET) will stop charging the battery. We do not need to remove the battery when not in use the battery . The battery can be placed any time the computer will not affect battery life.
(2 ) Battery BIOS information to avoid loss of connection .
( 3) to prevent a sudden power loss of data .

Note:But the laptop battery life , in fact, refers to its number of charge cycles , usually , according to different grades of the battery , the charge cycles are mostly between 300-400 times for mobile users often use the laptop in different places , For example, when the business meeting presentation PPT battery powered , home or hotel will be used when the AC power supply .

This poses a problem , If the battery is still a lot of time there is no need to charge right away , but if you do not remove the battery when the AC every time it will take time to recharge the battery , battery life will fall once , and each Times are removed the battery then do not bother to Dell’s business notebooks are very good , but solve the above problems, Dell Y9943 Battery, but requires the help of Dell controlpoint ( or DCP) power management device .

If the system does not pre-installed DCP power management software , need to find the software installation CD-ROM or downloaded from the Internet after installation run the DCP power management software , power management in the main interface, click button , after switching to the battery charging window , click Disable Battery Charging option , did not have to dismantle the battery , use the AC when the battery charge is not automatically given . This also effectively reduces the number of battery charge . Power management software through the DCP canView Dell battery , set the low battery alarm . Needs to be charged can be Fn + F2 to quickly and easily control

2 .To prevent exposure to prevent damp to prevent the erosion of chemical liquids , avoid contact with metal objects touch the battery short-circuit , etc. happen .

3 . Long-term without laptop , how to save battery ?
?? We will experience a period of time not to use laptops , the battery is fully charged, should be preserved , or need to save up is finished ?
Optical long-term preservation will put batteries lose their activity , leading to the control circuit protection self-locking and can no longer use the full power will bring long-term preservation security risks , the best preservation methods isThe electricity use to 40% and then stored in a cool dry place , about 20 degrees Celsius is the ideal storage temperature .Of course, take the battery out every month with the best time ,Dell Inspiron 630m Battery, Dell Inspiron 640m Battery, Dell Y9943 Battery can guarantee the good state of preservation battery , Dell Inspiron 640m Battery, not that bad for the loss of damage to the battery power completely .

Claudia Schiffer and Karl Lagerfeld Are Attacked by Fashion Editor of Black Lifestyle Magazine for Photo of Schiffer, Blacked-Up

July 14th, 2010 by showping

I was photographing in the last weeks – please tell me if you think they are good:

Rathaus, Rothenburg ob der Tauben by jprowland

{Themenblog zur diesjährigen Konferenz der Medienkunst

Claudia Schiffer has been attacked for offending black people after posing on a magazine cover made up as a black woman. The 39-year-old German supermodel wore black foundation and an afro-style wig in the photograph taken by fashion designer and photographer Karl Lagerfeld.

Lagerfeld had Schiffer made up as a black women in one of six photographs he took while putting together an advertising campaign for the vintage champagne Dom Perignon. The photos were published by German fashion magazine Stern Fotografie when it celebrated its 60th anniversary.

Accusations against Schiffer and Lagerfeld followed from Shevelle Rhule, the fashion editor of a London black lifestyle magazine, Pride. Ms Rhule said:

“It shows poor taste and it's offensive. There are not enough women of colour featured in mainstream magazines. This just suggests you can counteract the problem by using white models. I don't believe they deliberately set out to offend. They obviously see it as being arty and feel that they are pushing boundaries. But clearly no thought has been given to the history behind what they have done and the comparisons it draws with minstrel shows.”

To which I would reply: 'Shevelle, lighten up'. Her comment is the kind that perpetuates raw nerves about race and creates a path of spikey eggshells for people, black and white, to walk on. Society doesn't need race relations zealots, quangocrats or Pride fashion editors lecturing designers (or filmmakers or writers or rap singers…) on what they can or can't do. It's small-minded. Already an online magazine has responded to the photos with conformist knee-jerk political correctness by saying one of the other photos, of Schiffer as an Asian, is “just wrong”, scolding that Lagerfeld should have used more than one model in the interests of racial diversity.

Fashion, like fiction and film and other creative industries, should be free to play with any images it chooses. Did Ms Rhule also take offence at white French actor Gerard Depardieu recently playing mixed-race Alexander Dumas (using black make-up)? Or Eddie Murphy impersonating a white (jewish) person? Or black British actor Adrian Lester who played the white Danish prince, Hamlet? Or the black actor, David Oyelowo, who played white English king Henry VI?

Would she criticise images of Bob Dylan or the Rolling Stones dressed up as women? How about pantomime dames, women actors dressed as men, Eddie Izzard in frock and lipstick, comedians pretending to be children…?

As soon as you get into determining whether blacks can play whites and women can play men but not the other way round, you're proscribing the creative process and engaging in censorship. Clamping down on the arts in that way (even commercial arts like advertising) is as restricting as squashing free speech.

As for Rhule's comment that Lagerfeld and Schiffer were suggesting the photograph of a 'black' Schiffer would substitute for using black models in mainstream magazines – that's just plain foolish. Rhule then seems to have chucked minstrels into the discussion just for shock value.

In fact the photo was one of a series of six in which Lagerfeld was playing with Schiffer's image. Another showed her as a secretary, a third as an Asian woman. In a fourth she was dressed and made up as eighteenth century French queen, Marie Antoinette and in a fifth she was androgynous. The fashion shoot theme was fantasy and imagination. Lagerfeld wanted to play with Schiffer's face and Shiffer's image. He didn't want to use other models. He wasn't trying to portraying racial diversity – he was portraying imaginary Claudia Schiffers. And has every right to.

A spokesman for Lagerfeld responded to Rhule's criticism, saying she was taking them out of context: “The images were designed to reflect different men's fantasies. The pictures were not intended to offend, they were done very creatively and are some of Karl Lagerfeld's favourite images of Claudia. People should not jump to conclusions.”

Yet there are many people with vested interests in Britain and other liberal democracies who make a good living from jumping to conclusions and playing the race card in cases which can only trivialise genuine instances of racism. Political correctness about race and ethnicity has battened onto society like a barnacle on a boat. It would be a democratic step forward if those who have a professional interest in taking offence at 'racism' and other -isms would pick their battles more wisely.

It would also be good if the race relations industry ditched the term “people of colour”. What is it supposed to indicate?! What colour? Black? Dark brown? Sienna? All those and more? Does it imply that white people – with their variously pink, peachy, creamy, olive-toned, ugly red, bluey-white, brown or orangey skin – have no colour? Why aren't whites called “people of non-colour” then? Or “people of no-colour”?

Black and white are just words. They're quick and easy terms to use for those who want or need to indicate skin colour and they're neutral. People (like Ms Rhule perhaps) who want to take offence at one (and not the other) always will. But they're misguided. Countering racism is always worth doing. But cranking up and maintaining raw nerves unnecessarily does no-one any good. It just increases division between black and white and injects a zealous, scolding tone into debate which would benefit from more freedom, less 'sensitivity' and – in a case like the Schiffer/Lagerfeld photos – a bit of playfulness.

I’ve mentioned this a few times in the past, but this is an update to those posts. My local printer also runs a couple of notification lists for artists and photographers, and the sign-up location for them has moved.

There is now a single page that has two forms: one for photographers, and one for artists. When you sign up for a list, you will be notified of new juried shows and exhibitions for photographers or artists. The notifications are mainly aimed at southern California residents, but some are more broad.

If you’re into doing shows, exhibitions, or contests, you might want to sign up for the appropriate list and see what comes through.

PHOTOGRAPHER AND ARTIST NOTIFICATION LISTS

Second only to selecting your venue, selecting your Hudson Valley Wedding Photographer is the most important choice you have to make for your wedding day. You want your wedding photographer to be professional and easy-going. But above all you want your wedding photographer to be talented. They should possess a keen knowledge of photography and be able to use that knowledge in post production to give you more than Nike Air Force 1 Shoes a friend with a digital camera. There are a lot of Cheap Nike Air Force things to keep in mind when figuring out which photographer is best for you.

Know what kind of style you are looking for before you even meet with any Hudson Valley wedding photographers. What types of photos do you want to look back on through the years? Do you want a structured album filled with poses or are you interested in more artistic photographs? Be mindful of the photographers capabilities. There are Hudson Valley photographers that can do only one style and others who beautifully blend art and photojournalism with traditional wedding photography. Let them know what percentage of each style you expect.

The wedding photographer you choose should be experienced. When you meet with them, they should be able to show you recent images from full weddings – start to finish. The work that they present you with during the meeting should be their own, not a compilation from photographers they Cheap Nike Air Force 1 Shoes have working for them. In order to accurately assess style and skill level, you have to be sure what you are seeing is what you are going to get.

You want your wedding day to go smoothly. So it’s important that you get along well. Think about the kind of person you want next to you throughout the most important day of your life. Do not pick a photographer who gives you any kind of bad vibe. This person is the person who controls the timing of your entire day. You want someone patient and able to handle anything that comes their way.

Everyone has heard a horror story where the photographer that showed up to shoot a wedding wasn’t the photographer the bride and groom met with. There are greedy Hudson Valley photographers who book themselves in more than one place on one day and have an “associate” show up in their place. Ask for a guarantee in your contract that the AF1 shoes photographer you meet with is the one who shoots your wedding. When considering a second photographer, be mindful that the second photographer is not going to be as talented as the first. A talented Hudson Valley Wedding Photographer doesn’t rely on a second shooter for very much. One can always be provided, but more pictures don’t always mean more Air Force 1 Shoes good pictures. If you are on a budget, reconsider the importance of a second photographer.
A Brief Introduction to Automobile Insurance Comparison

In the first incident last March, he was actually tackled by an officer who supposedly was later disciplined.

You can hear that incident in the audio recording he made that demonstrates that although he is an aspiring pilot, he would make one hell of a lawyer.

The assault takes place in the first clip. The second clip captures the aftermath, including a moment when a cop tells Vorus he needs to “stop hiding behind the Constitution.”

In the latest incident earlier this month – which was covered by NBC Washington and might be covered by The Washington Post -  he came across a few cop cars making a traffic stop and snapped a few photos.

A male cop demanded to know what he was doing. He asked if he was being detained. The cop hemmed and hawed and told him no, he was not being detained. That he was free to go.

“As I was walking away, two other units pulled up,” he said in a phone interview with Photography is Not a Crime.

A female officer then stepped out and demanded his identification. He asked again if he was being detained. He also started recording the conversation.

“I notified her that I was only required to provide her with ID if I was suspected of a crime,” he said.

“She said, ‘yes, you’re being detained.’ I said, ‘now that we’ve established I’m being detained, here is my ID,’.”

The officer, who was under the impression that it was illegal to photograph police in public, then checked to see if he had any warrants against him. She also said it was illegal for him to audio record her, which he was doing openly.

Neither is illegal in Washington DC.

Meanwhile, the first cop was telling him that he was free to leave. Both officers were of equal rank.

Vorus asked for a supervisor, which only complicated matters.

“A sergeant arrived and told me I could not take pictures without permission,” he said.

A friend of his then arrived at the scene and tried correcting the officers by informing them that he, in fact, did not need permission to take their photos.

“Then they started asking for her ID,” he said.

But she knew better than to provide her identification.

He was eventually released after almost 30 minutes.

A few days later, Vorus spoke to a Sgt. Mercer at the police department to file a complaint.

“He said those officers were incorrect and that anyone can take pictures on public property,” he said. “He also told me he would speak to the officers to get their side of the story.

“It was Tuesday and he told me to call him back on Wednesday.”

Vorus called back on Thursday and surprise, surprise, the sergeant was no longer so cooperative.

“He now had an attitude. He said the officers told him I was taking pictures of inside the police cars. I told him all the pictures I took are posted on my blog.”

Not that it should have made a difference. As long as he is not physically entering the police cars, he has every right to photograph whatever can be seen from the outside. If the cops don’t like it, let them tint their windows.

The First Incident

Vorus was hoping to take photos of airplanes at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in Arlington, Va.

It was March 1st and Vorus contacted the airport’s media relations department to inquire about its photo policy. He spoke to a Tara Hamilton.

We talked about me taking photos at the airport check-in kiosk for the airlines since that was private property leased by the airport, she notified me that I would need to ask their station managers. She also told me that she would notify TSA and Airport Police of my presence.

It wasn’t long before he was approached by Transportation Security Administration officials inquiring about his photography. The first two times, the TSA officials were in uniform. He told them he had permission and they did not push the matter further.

But then he was approached by two men in suits who told him he was not allowed to photograph “TSA checkpoints or TSA personnel.”

“They said they were in law enforcement. I asked them to show me a badge,” he said.

One of the men told him, “we ain’t going to show you shit.”

They eventually pulled out Homeland Security credentials.

Vorus began recording the conversation. He then snapped some photos of the men.

Then he walked away after being informed he wasn’t being detained.

But then one of the Homeland Security officers beckoned a uniformed Metropolitan Washington Airport Police officer who was on a bicycle, telling him him that Vorus was being “combative.”

In cop talk, combative is anytime you question their authority. It’s the equivalent of contempt of cop. The only difference is, the word “combative” written on a police report gives them the justification of beating your head in.

So Vorus got into a discussion with the police officer, whose name turned out to be Corporal King.

I asked him “was I being detained” after 2 minutes of his hostility, and he did not respond. I then asked a couple more times. He stated no, I then asked him was I free to leave he also said no, I then followed up with well then I am being detained.  He asked me for identification. I asked one more time was I being detained. NOTE: “By this point I am extremely frustrated. I was verbally abused by two TSA employees and accosted by an Airport Police Officer.”  Officer King stated that if I did not provide proper Identification, I would need to leave the airport. I decided at this point I would depart from the airport.

As he was walking away, Vorus turned around and snapped a photo of King and another officer who had joined him.

This caused King to become combative, to say the least.

I was told by other officers that I was being detained as a suspicious person. When it was confirmed that I had been detained, relinquished a VA Driver License. I then was told that I would be taken to jail at least for disorderly conduct.

Officers came, examined the images that were stored on my camera’s memory card. I was told to delete the images of TSA personnel and airport personnel. I was released twenty minutes later. I was told that I was being detained for suspicious behavior, but I was never searched.

When I took a picture of Officer King he jumped off of his bicycle and said “your ass ain’t gonna take a picture of me” and tackled me.  I yelled “ that is assault, get off of me”. He grabbed the camera that was around my neck and walked away. The female officer yelled and motioned for me to sit on stairs that were to our left, two more officers came and yelled for me to sit down. One officer had a M-4 assault rifle.

The cops ended up deleting his images, which he was unable to recover, before sending him on his way.

He ended up filing a complaint against King and learned that the officer had “violated departmental policy” and “appropriate action has been taken” but wasn’t told any details, which probably means King was simply told not to tackle anybody when it was obvious he was being recorded.

“Extremely weak product support! Not recommended” 2010-05-27
By Emre Kekec (United States)
I am a software engineer who has used a variety of brands. I got a 3 month old DV6t-2000 i7 quad core with 8GB RAM for development purposes. I trusted in HP brand and bought this computer to see that there is absolutely no support. The computers GET issues from time to time, a well performing computer does not necessarily mean that it is a good product.

The support department is going to offer you to replace the whole panel and reformat the PC if one of your key-caps(in my case up arrow) gets loose or broken. You will have to leave your PC to service department for at least a month if you have warranty, and if your warranty is over may God help you since your will have to pay several hundred dollars. There is absolutely 0 initiative, and prepare to talk to human robots. I went up to their CEO! and could not get a resolution. Managers are arrogant and chooses to fight with the customer instead of offering solutions.

I am an IT expert and strongly suggest advanced and novice users to stay away from HP as far as possible…

After sending several emails and hours spent on the phone calls, I could get the support department to resolve the issue. However, they sent a whole keyboard panel. So, it seems, once the warranty period is over, I would have to pay for the panel. It is a powerful computer , yet the support is still weak.
